We Need Shelf Brackets For Our Floating Shelves

February 2nd, 2010

I believe that every householder feels how limited his floor area really is when it comes to movement of certain items and their storage. We could all use more of free space, and an easy and practical way of having it is by installing shelf brackets. These are simply boards that are fixed to the wall. The two main advantages are that you create additional storing place while they add to the beauty of the area surrounding them. They are good as having a big closet or a dresser on the wall. These are designed to offer additional storage while adding to the décor of the room.

The mounts incorporated to support the shelf brackets are rather unsightly. That’s what prompts most of the people to go for floating wall shelving as it hides all the paraphernalia of supporting structure. You get them in many sizes with different styles. While they make the room look nicer, you can store a number of items therein and thus reduce clutter in the house.

Installation of a floating wall shelf is somewhat difficult and you may consider having a professional to do it for you. However, you may venture into its installation if you really want to learn the technique. It will need good amount of patience and a little hard work. The trick here is to learn how to conceal the brackets and mounts without disturbing the equilibrium of the shelving unit. A novice would do well to get a shelving kit that has all the needed hardware.

First of all you should mark the place where you intend keeping the unit. Check and crosscheck you measurements and markings. As usual, the first one will be the most difficult, but more often the benefits outweigh the effort. Don’t forget to check its alignment before going ahead with the drilling of holes.

Handling of power drills needs caution and you should be familiar with the machine. Do not overlook any of the operating instructions for sake of your personal safety.

Having drilled the needed number of holes on either side put in place the wall anchors and bolt the brackets. Satisfy yourself that it is firmly secured. Now it’s time to start using this shelf bracket. Here’s an item that you will find useful and good-looking.

Do It Yourself Shelving

December 22nd, 2009

Despite the availability of floating wall shelves in many materials and designs, I find it an interesting DIY project to make shelving for my home.

I made most of the shelves in my home, with little trouble and time invested. I find it interesting to make them on my own for many reasons, three of which I mention here.

Reason 1: Custom Designs

Nearly every shelf that I made finally acquires a unique design of its own as it conforms to the specific needs of storing particular items. For instance, one of the girls wished to have a shelf above her bed that could house her Barbie dolls in a particular fashion. Finally, she got one in the exactly required size with just the right combination of cubes and open space. I really wonder if such a shelf would have been readily available in the market!

Reason 2: Cost Reductions

Believe me, it works out economical to make your own shelving. While designing an ordinary bookcase, for instance, I take care to adjust the design to suit the normal dimensions of a standard-sized wood board, taking care to cut wood in such a manner that the left over pieces would fit into making of some other item. I realized that for buying a similar sized bookcase I would have spent more.

And let me tell you that I don’t go out to buy fresh wood for all the projects. These days I have taken a project to make a storage unit that sits and fits over the toilet of children’s bedroom. The wood for this project was gifted by one of my neighbors who would have thrown it anyway. Of course, I plan to buy new hardware, handles included. Yet I estimate the total expenditure to be about $13. And, mind you, this is not a standard sized item of the kind that one could buy in a store. I save money but over and above made an optimum use of the available space.

Reason 3: Enjoyment

In the process of saving money, I saved a few trees also! It really gives you a high, designing and making something for the loved ones is an extraordinary experience. In the garden shed I developed a reasonably big place for working on wood. Spending an hour or two out there and being creative really keeps me relaxed. That apart there is another big advantage of spending time with kids who are always more than eager to help designing the item to suit their ideas. In the process get to learn certain aspects of working with wood, home décor and how to plan things before hand. I expect these skills to help them in future as they find out how to design things as per the available means and materials. But, that’s not the end of it all. It’s really quality time with kids getting a thrill of having actually used a real tool rather than a toy. They also learn about safety and responsibility. Both the parties gain in this process.

So, that’s how it is. Even if you aren’t too sure of getting started with a DIY project on shelving, have the courage to take a chance and you won’t regret that decision. It’s not a matter of money, imagine the thrill of creating something on your own and the pleasure it brings!

Bathroom Shelving Options

November 16th, 2009

Having additional storage in bathroom is not only helpful but also important for taking care of the items therein. Depending upon the size and style of your bathroom, you’ll have many options of shelving material and styles to choose from and make it all the more inviting.

Bathroom Shelving Materials

Bathroom shelving can employ one of the four materials mentioned here. Generally those are all easy to maintain and bring in a different look and feel to this room.

Glass –frosted or clear glass look great in modern bathrooms, while provide an attractive contrast in ornate bathrooms. Glass shelving may be mounted on two side brackets or on wall mounts that get hidden behind it. Frosted glass shelves often employ this technique. Glass shelves installed as tier shelves look all the more attractive. Here, all the shelves may have an even size or they might get gradually tapered to smaller size while they go up the wall. We know that glass shelves are the easiest to clean but they might develop cracks. Therefore, care should be taken to buy shelves made from tempered glass only.

bathroom shelves

Plastic –Plastic shelves are ideal for children’s bathroom or infrequently used utility rooms. As these may be handled roughly, they make an appropriate choice for children, who generally tend to slam cabinets, shove drawers and stuff them to the most. Well, they are quite easy to maintain but generally lack good looks.

Metal – You get metal shelves in two varieties, the polished one and the unpolished one. Modern styled bathrooms look beautiful with polished brass, chrome or steel. The unpolished variety I steel or aluminum is more often used in utility rooms and laundry rooms because there it is the capacity of storage that takes precedence over style.

Wood – Generally wood and wicker aren’t considered good for damp and humid conditions, the treated woods that we get these days are designed to withstand the prevalent heat and humid atmosphere of a bathroom. Their availability in a range of attractive colors, styles and shade makes them suitable for any style of bathroom, be it Victorian or contemporary Asian.

Bathroom Shelving Styles

Having decided on the shelving material that would most suit your requirements, you may proceed with the selection of a style that works best for you.

Open –Open shelves offer the convenience of locating the desired item in a jiffy. These are available in attractive designs of glass, wood or polished metals. Use a bit of imagination to store colored bottles of different size and give it a personal touch while adding to the aesthetics of your bathroom. Drawers and vanity cabinets are good for storing personal or non-decorative items often required in the bathroom. . Corner glass shelves provide the much-needed extra storage in small bathrooms and help keeping the clutter out of sight.

bathroom shelving

Cabinets – Wooden cabinets may be open on the front or with a glass or wooden door. Open-faced cabinets often designed like cubbies are good for storing towels and big containers. Usually, glass door cabinets are mounted on the wall, but may well be fixed over the toilet or just kept on the floor. These are available in many styles to go well with any small to medium-sized bathroom.

Floor –Though wood is the most often used material for floor, you also get them in plastic, especially suited for children. Generally they are designed to look like a vanity with a flat top but may also be designed with baskets and cubbies. You may have open cubbies or keep baskets in some. Some of the floor units are provided with hanging baskets. Large bathrooms can accommodate floor shelving, but small bathrooms look good with comer units.

Steel Storage Shelves

November 2nd, 2009

Almost any business involves setting up of proper and adequate storage facilities. You’ll find steel storage shelves a good option for your business operations, more so if it’s an industrial business. Steel shelving is quite popular because of the benefits it offers.

Of course you would have seen and used plastic storage cabinets, wall mounted cabinets, wooden bookshelves and glass corner shelves. But none of these is going to be suitable for your business. That’s because the environments of an industrial house are far different than those of a household. The commercial activities at your industrial place are not benefited by any of the shelving noted above, especially when you have heavy-duty operations or systems. The best option for you would be to go for steel shelves or racks.

But having steel shelves in your warehouse is just half the job done. You should take one step ahead and understand more about steel shelving and the associated terminology. For instance you may be floored when terms like riveting shelving and crossing braces are used. You may be ignorant of the role of a steel wire in storage shelves!

Unless you understand certain terms and ideas you will find it difficult to make an effective use of the steel shelves for business purposes. You may find it interesting to learn that basically there are two types of shelving: open and the closed ones, which are generally used in the kitchen and storage rooms. If you find a storage shelves that has steel panels at the back and the sides, it is closed shelving, else it is an open one.
Then, you also have wire steel shelving and rivet shelving. While the former is lighter and permits better airflow, the latter is more affordable and adjustable. You’ll also come across terms like starter unit and adder unit of steel shelving.

Further, we have accessories called modular drawers and cross braces. To make steel shelves more stable cross braces are fixed at the back and as is apparent from the name these have an “X” shape. You can understand a lot more terminology if you had the patience to research them and needless to add that Internet offers the most helpful medium for gathering and understanding such terms.

You’ll find it helpful to know and understand the key terms used for steel shelving, as you will be better prepared to choose and effectively use the most appropriate system that will help your business operations.

Floating Shelves Get Rid Of Clutter From Your Counters And Floors

October 18th, 2009

Unless you organize your home to get rid of clutter and arrange all the needed items in a manner that facilitates retrieval, your home will not be able to offer a neat and welcoming look. And the most effective and practical way of putting things in order is to have wall shelving. Without eating into your floor area, they offer an ideal storage media, be it for items of daily needs or your decorative accessories. Just like thermos that have varied sizes, shapes and colors, wall shelves too come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. You may have them on the walls, in corners or even hang them down from the ceiling or just leave them on the floor.

Let us view some o the popular designs of shelving. In its simplest form a wall shelf comprises of two brackets on which a shelf rests. You may consider having a decorative shelf and bracket for your living room to display some of the decorative pieces or old inheritances. For your closets, storage rooms, basements and garages you may go for plain wooden or metallic brackets.

Though we generally tend to overlook corners, these could well be utilized by having a few corner shelves in many of the rooms. For instance, corner shelves in the living room could be great for displaying a potted plant or family photos or any decorative item for that matter.

Let’s consider a ladder shelf. It has a very simple but unique design. It rests on the floor and can have a couple of shelves one above the other but of varying sizes, with the largest one at the bottom at the smallest one nearing its top. Look at its advantages; while you could use the lower shelves for heavier and bigger items like a flower vase, the upper shelves could hold small items like books, photos, and other collectibles. Well, these do occupy some space on the floor but are worth having for the sheer accommodating area offered by those.

modern shelving

Hanging shelves are especially helpful when you have limited wall space. These do not occupy any floor space and can be hung over from any place, be it your desk or an end table.

And, finally we come to see a floating shelf. With such a shelf, the accessories needed for fixing it up are hidden from view, giving it the appearance of hanging in mid-air. As a mater of fact all that paraphernalia needed to support it is hidden between its back and the surface of the wall on which it’s hung. A well-designed floating shelf can make any wall look more attractive and add value to its contents that you might like to display.

Let your imagination run riot, for there is no dearth of wall shelves and you are sure to locate one that fits your requirements and imagination. Books and magazines on interior decoration provide a whole lot of information on what’s available and what’s hot these days. Browse thru such magazines and learn to give shape to your imagination. Or, why not visit your local shelving store or even a home supply store to look at the available range of designs, sizes and colors. Installation of a wall shelf is perhaps one of the easiest DIY projects that you could indulge into for having an additional space to arrange and display your valuables.

There is no better way of organizing your home or office than having appropriate shelving arrangements for different rooms.

Decorative Wall Shelf – The Basics

October 5th, 2009

When you think about it, every home that had someone living in it had to go through many changes. And in that process of growing up, home had some decorative wall shelf in the room. My father liked to have them in the living room, all the bedrooms, dining area and the kitchen also. I think he liked our home to continue to have a new and interesting look all the while.

It may be worth exploring the possibility of having a decorative wall shelf and get enhanced looks from the same room. Try with a 24-inch wide shelf on one of the walls of your living room. Think of including a floral arrangement or another decorative piece like a crystal, figurine, or a decorative vase that gives an added effect to the ambience. You will quickly realize that there is no end to the decorative items that can be displayed via an equally decorative floating shelf. In case of two items that complement each other, you might as well have two suitably placed wall shelves in the same room. I think anybody could think of ideas to give a special look to the shelves.

Of course you’ll keep the theme and design of existing furniture in mind. These shelves are available in maple, oak or walnut that will jell with the interiors of your home to provide symmetry and warmth. Yet, you may have them in pure white or black color or even get them painted to have your perfect shade.

decorative wall shelves

There’s a very good design available for the bedrooms, known as display ledge. These are often referred to as floating shelves because the arrangement for fixing them on the wall is hidden from view, giving them the appearance of floating in the air. You may consider having multiple shelving on the same wall. It comprises of shelves of different sizes suitably hung at varying levels. It all depends on the location of the room and the size of its walls adding to the comfort level of the room and giving it a characteristic looks.

Add to the convenience and personality of your dining area by adding a decorative wrought iron wall bracket. This is a dark wooden shelf supported on supported on beautifully crafted wrought iron brackets. The supporting brackets that keep in place the wooden shelf, are derived by cleverly twisting beautiful shapes of wrought iron in rust color. You may have more than one, depending on the size and positioning of walls, they look great on opposite walls.

There is a wide variety of materials to choose from, especially when we come to the dining room.  You can choose glas, iron, metal, wood, plastic, black or white shelves. But it all depends how you decide to give it a complete look.

Now let’s check on your kitchen, the place where you work the most while at home and your creativity literally flows out. Modern kitchens involve a lot of stainless steel, and for good reason. Kitchens with retro designs have brightly colored walls, covered with metallic kitchenware.

And country kitchens, of course involve themes of farm animals, and wild flowers or birds. Such kitchens incorporate decorative wall shelves in pleasant designs and styles. There are kitchens with tiled walls and backsplashes or walls that have paintings of food and beverages as pieces of art around the place. Some kitchen cabinets are painted with solid colors and there are others made of stained wood. When looking for a decorative shelf for you kitchen you should look for such a design that it would not disturb the overall balance of scheme of things in the kitchen and dominate the whole scenario.

Decorative shelves have dual function and the more important one is that it should enhance the décor of the place. It should be a source of pleasure for anybody walking into the room. Additionally, it should facilitate a tasteful display of your cherished possessions, which could be anything from an antiquated flower vase to a piece of modern filigree.

You will not regret having spent some of your time online looking at wonderful pieces of decorative wall shelves in such an abundance of style and design. Take you time to select a few that would present a beautifully enhanced look to any of your chosen rooms.
